Things to do in Palm Springs

PALM SPRINGS AERIAL TRAMWAY

Christmas is a special time of the year. In Palm Springs, in the desert, this winter holiday is especially notable. Some of the features of this wide-open region make for a memorable Yuletide.

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway recalls cable cars traversing the Alpine Mountains. Passengers get a breathtaking bird’s eye view covering thousands of feet of mountains and valleys. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, with the world’s largest rotating tramcars, rises to a height of 8516 feet, with its Mountain Station at its apex. Since its first inaugural run on September 14, 1963, the Aerial Tramway has ferried tens of thousands of visitors up and down the more than a mile-and-a-half distance of the sheer cliffs of Chino Canyon. The difference in elevation between the desert floor and Mountain Station routinely registered a 30 degree temperature difference. Visitors may want to bring a sweater or a jacket even in the warmer months. In winter, and over the Christmas period, where snow is everywhere in evidence, dressing in warm clothing goes without saying.

PALM SPRINGS FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS PARADE

The Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade was performed for the first time on December 5th, 1992 in the heart of Palm Springs and has continued to be one of the best holiday events for the family every year. It is certain to be one of those Christmas vacations that you and your family will never forget. Witnessed by an estimated 80,000 people annually, the parade features a host of marching bands, performing groups, as well as the Budweiser Clydesdales, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Snoopy and his gang, and of course Santa and Mrs. Claus! More than anything else, it is the parade’s signature floats festooned in vibrant holiday lights and the famed dancing tractor, the largest in the world, decorated with over 20 miles of lights, which makes this event so worthwhile.  Consistently voted one of the best local events in Coachella Valley, the parade was also voted as one of the top ten holiday parades in the country in an AOL survey. The parade is slated to kick off at 5:45 pm on the first Saturday in December, at Palm Canyon Drive and Ramon Road. You won’t want to miss this free and memorable event for the whole family!
