One animal that visitors to Banff National Park are likely to see is the elk, also known as the wapiti. These majestic creatures are known for their large antlers, which can grow up to four feet long. Many elk even wander out of the park and into the town of Banff itself so that they can graze on plants in the hamlet’s many gardens.

Moose are also a common sight in Banff, although their population is declining. These animals are most easily spotted near the Saskatchewan River Crossing and Waterfowl Lakes.

The park is also home to a community of 45 wolves divided into five separate packs. Wolves were eradicated within the borders of the reserve in the 1950s, but the species were re-introduced in 1982 and have been thriving ever since. Although their small population makes them harder to see, visitors may still spot wolves near Lake Minnewaka during the winter and near Lake Louise throughout the year.
