Older travelers with Calaveras County vacation rentals can go for the gold when Bear Valley ski resort holds the second annual California Senior Winter Games from March 11-13, 2011.
The Olympic-style event, which is open to men and women aged 50 and over, is being held in conjunction with the California Senior Games Association. Events include downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and more.
People of all skill levels are welcome to join in the games, as no racing experience is required. Those with an intermediate or higher level of ability are encouraged to enter the skiing or snowboarding events, whereas competitors who are less experienced with these sports can compete in the snowshoeing events. Bear Valley will be holding three practice clinics before the event begins to help competitors brush up on their skills.
Several events are being held for people under 50 who want to compete as well, including a sprint race and a cross country event.
Ultimately, however, the Senior Winter Games are about fun. Competitors, their families and spectators can mingle and relax at Bear Valley's dinner banquets, musical performances, wine tastings and even a torchlight parade.
