This February, residents and those who book California vacation rentals can take their Valentines to the National Date Festival, which will take over the town of Indio from February 17-26.
Although the timing of the fair lines up with the romantic holiday, the annual celebration is not named after the act of courtship. Since 1947, residents of Riverside County and travelers on timeshare vacations have gathered to honor the date palm harvest. About 250,000 date palms line the 5,000 acres of the Coachella Valley, producing approximately 35 million pounds of dates each year.
Each year, the Date Festival attracts individuals from all over to browse the 7,000-plus exhibits and witness the abundant produce competitions involving local farmers. Recent expansion of the show has resulted in the presence of musical performances – this year will include LeAnn Rimes, Hot Chelle Rae and Uncle Kracker – a beauty pageant contest and more.
An age-old legend fuels the excitement behind the Queen Pageant. Baghdad storytellers share the history of Queen Scheherazade, a smart young woman who tricked an ancient king into falling in love with her. Book resort rentals in nearby areas such as Palm Springs and take your significant other or family members to witness competitions, try date milkshakes and more at the acclaimed California festival.
