While each of the Hawaiian Islands has its fair share of historic destinations, Oahu has some of the best known. This is due in part to the fact that Oahu is not only the most populous of the islands, but also the location of the state capital, Honolulu.

For the U.S., the Island of Oahu is also significant as the location of the Battle of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. It is here that more than 2,000 Americans lost their lives bravely fighting against the Imperial Japanese Navy. Visitors can pay their respects to the fallen and learn more about the historic event that brought the U.S. into World War II at the USS Arizona Memorial in Honolulu.

At this famous site, visitors can board a boat that takes them to the bridge-like memorial that floats over the sunken USS Arizona. Inside this structure, individuals can view the battleship that now sits on Pearl Harbor’s floor.

After visiting the somber, yet significant USS Arizona Memorial, travelers may have a little more fun at the Dole Plantation, which is located in Oahu’s Wahiawa District. If the kids are in tow, they may not be too excited about a trip to a pineapple plantation, but that opinion is sure to change when they hop aboard this attraction’s famous Pineapple Express. Travelers who wish to learn more about the state’s royal past can take a tour of ‘Iolani Palace in Honolulu. This National Historic Landmark served as the home to King Kalākaua and his sister Queen Lili‘uokalani.

Unlike traditional Ferris wheels, the SkyWheel features 42 fully enclosed gondolas that are not only climate controlled, but help create a unique light show every night. The attraction is still relatively new to this popular tourist spot, having just opened in May 2011. This National Historic Landmark was founded in 1798 and gained the nickname, “King of the Missions,” as it is the largest of  21 missions  in California. On a visit to the mission’s museum, individuals can learn about the Luiseno people who inhabited the Oceanside area prior to the Spanish taking control of the region. In addition, they will also see how the San Luis Rey area changed throughout its different periods of occupation as they view Native American artifacts and other fascinating pieces.

The museum’s current exhibit is titled Transitional Thinking: A Short Story 1966-1972, and explores the ways in which surfing evolved along with the rest of the world during this period.

Past exhibits have focused on the rise of the female surfer and the role this aquatic activity has played in popular culture.
