Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are widely celebrated throughout the world, but Latinos love to have an excuse for a fiesta and spend time with family and friends. Children’s Day is always filled with activities, and children look forward to a holiday all their own with fun, gifts and special events.

Many schools celebrate it the day before and parents are invited. Of course, in Mexico, there are usually no classes on Children’s Day itself, April 30, even though it is not an official holiday in the school calendar.

The main focus of this particular celebration is to make children feel special. In shopping malls all over Mexico, special events with clowns, magicians, music, shows and balloons take place. Amusement parks as well as zoos and children’s museums usually offer discounts or special deals for children on this day. Water parks are a popular option for spending the day, taking advantage of April’s warm weather. Lines for the water slides can be quite long, but the reward of a refreshing splash in a swimming pool waiting at the end are truly worth the wait.

It is a festivity that is quite unique, full of laughter and play, when adults are reminded of the importance of childhood and children teach us how joyful and simple life can be. I’ll never forget how happy I was when I got a new Barbie, a new dress, or I simply hung out with my friends and together broke a piñata on Children’s Day. Nowadays the story is different; children seem to be more inclined for Blackberries, Ipods, and videogames as technology has become an important part of contemporary lifestyles.

There are many things you can do with your children this weekend. The San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum in collaboration with the City of Escondido will celebrate it on April 28th at the Escondido’s Grape Day Park. You can also take them to beach and ride some bicycles. At Coronado you can rent the surreys for 2 or 4 people and enjoy a beautiful coast ride.

How Children’s Day is celebrated might have changed, but the focus is still the same: just having fun and enjoying being a kiddo!

Coronado, California, is known far and wide for its tranquil beaches and picturesque views of San Diego Bay. There is no better way for visitors to this resort town to appreciate these and many other sights than to take part in the variety of outdoor activities available to them.Whether visitors want to hit the links or build a sand castle, this popular West Coast destination has them covered.

For instance, travelers can enjoy a plethora of outdoor activities at North Beach, whether they have come to Coronado alone or with their family. Even their canine companions will enjoy this sandy attraction, as dogs are allowed on the beach off-leash. Those who brought their surfboard on vacation with them can rise bright and early to hit the waves before the beach gets too crowded. In the evening, this spot becomes a great site for a bonfire.

Then, there is Silver Strand State Beach, which is a great place for the kids to build their seashell collections. Older individuals are also welcome to camp overnight on the beach.

When the kids are not looking for seashells under Coronado’s white sand, they can run amuck in the playground at Spreckels Park. At this 8-acre site, visitors will find picnic tables and other park amenities. Spreckels is also the location of several summertime concerts and events.

If travelers want to use their time in Coronado to work on their golf swing, then they can make their way to one of the resort’s beautifully designed courses.

Vacationers who hit the links at the Coronado Golf Course, for example, will be able to play a few rounds on a 6,590-yard course, while taking in amazing views of San Diego Bay and the lengthy Coronado Bridge. After golfers finish at the 18th hole, they can move on to Grumpy Dan’s Grill and fuel up with a hot dog.

If tennis has always been a traveler’s favorite game, they will want to bring their racket to the Coronado Tennis Center, where they will find eight public courts. If they forgot to pack a racket or tennis balls, then they can always rent whatever they need right at the center.

When travelers arrive in a new city, they may wonder how they can get to know their surroundings in a way that is both quick and educational. If individuals are visiting Coronado, California, then they can head to the Coronado Historical Association and Museum of History and Art.

A trip to this cultural institution will provide those staying at Coronado Beach vacation rentals with a chance to participate in a wide range of educational activities and receive the overview of the resort city they desire.

For instance, if visitors want to get to know Coronado alongside an expert in local history, then they should consider going on one of the available walking tours. These activities cover several different aspects of the city, such as its history and architecture.

To learn more about one of the resort’s main attractions, the Hotel del Coronado, travelers will want to sign up for the 75-minute tour that will take them through this landmark’s extensive history. Meanwhile, the Coronado Heritage Walk brings participants to significant spots around the city so they can appreciate important buildings and learn about a few famous residents.

No matter which tour travelers choose, they ensure that their stay at vacation rentals in Coronado is an educational one.

After a day spent relaxing on the beaches of Coronado, California, travelers who are staying at vacation rentals in this resort city may be looking for something to do indoors. A great way to get some culture and have a little fun in the process is to take in a show at the Lamb’s Players Theatre.

This nonprofit performing arts organization is comprised of local actors, directors and designers. While many of these artists have been working together for more than 20 years, the company is always accepting new talent.

The Lamb’s Players Theatre is located inside the Spreckles Building, just two blocks away from the city’s most famous site – the Hotel del Coronado.

Visitors can see what is playing at the Lamb’s Players Theatre while relaxing at their Coronado timeshare rentals. Those who arrive in the resort city before March 24 have a chance to catch a performance of the classic musical, Guys & Dolls.

Travelers visiting Coronado between April and August can see performances of Brownie Points, Joe VS the Volcano and See How They Run.

The two events, known as the SUPERSEAL and SEAL sprint triathlons, will be taking place on March 27 at Silver Strand State Beach. The beach, which is named for the silver shells found along its 2.5-mile coastline, serves as a training ground for Navy SEALs, some of the military’s most elite fighters.

The SUPERSEAL triathlon is a standard sprint-length event, including a 1,500-meter swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride and a 10-kilometer run. Athletes looking for a less strenuous event can participate in the shorter SEAL triathlon, which features a 500-meter swim, a 20-kilometer bike course and a 6-kilometer run.

People participating in the triathlons must arrive before 7 a.m. and are advised to bring a wetsuit, as the water in the bay is projected to be around 58 degrees.

All proceeds from the race will be donated to the Moki Martin SUPERFROG Fund (MMSF), a non-profit group that helps support education, health and welfare programs aimed at the families of Navy SEALs who are killed or wounded.

If you are a fitness enthusiast, come visit Coronado, California.

A Girlfriends’ Getaway Stays Local
By Wendy Lemlin

Sometimes you just need a break. Not a long vacation, but certainly more of a change of scenery than a “staycation”. Get away from the phone, get away from the computer, and get away from all the little chores around the house that nag to be done. In fact, get away from the kids and significant other, if applicable. We’re talking abdication of responsibility, here. Maybe take off with a friend or two and go somewhere that’s relaxing, but fun at the same time. You don’t even need to travel far, distance-wise, to be amazed at how a change of environment makes for a change in temperament.

If, like me, you’re lucky enough to live somewhere that other people vacation TO (in my case, San Diego, CA), planning a close-to-home girlfriends’ getaway is fraught with possibilities.

Me & Faith enjoying a glass of wine in our condo at the Coronado Beach Resort

My friend Faith and I recently indulged ourselves with a gal-pal gallivant. Although just minutes from home, our escape provided much needed revitalization, without the stress of travel arrangements and navigating unfamiliar territory.

To really feel like you’re stepping out of your everyday life, there’s nothing like a stay at a resort to put you in that “I’m-on-vacation” state of mind. Lounge around a pool, have a spa treatment (or two or three), play some tennis (or golf or whatever sport relaxes you), walk on the beach, dine at an elegant on-site restaurant, shop the boutiques, work out at the fitness center—-all at your fingertips. Comfortable, roomy accommodations with pillowtop beds and space to lounge around comfortably are also a prerequisite.

Faith & Me enjoying the view from the roof deck of the Coronado Beach Resort

We booked our girlfriend getaway through ResorTime.com, a company that specializes in renting out accommodations at timeshare resorts. Personally, I love the idea of staying in a condo-type lodging—for a rate that is usually much less than a generic hotel room, the units have more space, usually with a separate living room, creating a homey feeling, and a kitchen or kitchenette (which helps in saving the cost of eating every meal out, and makes a dinner splurge at an incredible restaurant all the more do-able).

In the seaside resort town of Coronado, just on the other side of San Diego Bay from my home in downtown San Diego, and literally a 15 minute drive away, Faith and I enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing stay at the Coronado Beach Resort. Located in the heart of the town, the resort is within easy walking distance to wide sandy beaches, a myriad of restaurants, countless boutiques, and a biking/walking trail that stretches for over 15 miles.

Our 2 bedroom, 1 ½ bath condo came equipped with kitchenette (where we promptly stored our wine, cheese, and chocolate —which as everyone knows, is essential for a successful girlfriend’s getaway!), as well as a living room with flat screen TV, VCR, and music system, where we could veg out while enjoying said wine and goodies.

Me at the Coronado Ferry Landing

We started our getaway with a bike ride (the resort provides bikes and beach towels) around the “island”. Coronado actually sits at the end of a long peninsula, but everyone refers to it as an island, and that actually enhances its resort-y feel. Unlike much of hilly San Diego, Coronado is flat and is a perfect venue for biking or blading, both around the town, and along the bike path that wends along both the eastern, Bay side, and the western, ocean side, continuing south along the 8 or so miles of the “Silver Strand”, the narrow strip of land that connects Coronado to Imperial Beach and the mainland. About half way down the strand sits the Loews Coronado Bay Resort, with whom the Coronado Beach Resort shares a reciprocal arrangement for use of its amenities. Faith and I stopped in to lounge by the heated pool and enjoy lunch at the resort’s Market Café, made even more yummy by the 30% discount we received as guests of Coronado Beach Resort.

Faith enjoying the incredible views at Candela’s on the Bay

Returning to our rooms, we had time to uncork the wine and and relax, before heading to dinner at Candela’s On the Bay, a Mexican/French fusion restaurant with ahh-inspiring views of the San Diego skyline, from its location at the Coronado ferry landing. My strawberry basil martini whispered “vacation” with every sip, as we began our meal by sharing a melt in the mouth appetizer of fresh seared scallops sautéed with Portobello mushrooms, onions, cilantro and jalapeno peppers in a white wine sauce. To cleanse the palate, we next went with a watercress salad with pears, bleu cheese and pistachios in a mango vinaigrette. My entrée of Camarones Cabo de Puertas tingled every taste bud, with jumbo shrimp flambéed in tequila served over a sashimi filet of ahi tuna with a dollop of avocado and drizzled with tamarindo sauce. Faith’s Manajar Vallarta was equally delicious—sea bass baked and served in a delightful grape cream sauce, with mashed potatoes, Portobello mushrooms and sautéed veggies. Although we thought we were too stuffed for dessert, we manged to make short work of the rich caramel crepes that the manager suggested we try.

Seared Scallops and Portobello Mushrooms at Candela’s on the Bay

As we took a short stroll along the harborfront in an effort to walk off some of the zillion delicious calories we had just happily consumed, a fireworks display across the Bay in San Diego marked the end of a very perfect day, and we contentedly returned to our condo for another glass of wine and some good old fashioned girl-talk.

The following day we made use of the resort’s gym and spent time enjoying the fantastic ocean view from the rooftop lounge area, from which we could ogle both Mexico (only about 15 miles away) and coastal San Diego. Then, always a prerequisite for a girlfriend’s getaway, it was time for shopping in Coronado’s boutiques, followed by a visit to the Coronado Historical Society’s museum where we had the pleasure of speaking with a descendant of one of Coronado’s oldest families. Our final activity entailed a stroll along the beautiful beaches, where the sand sparkles with flecks of fool’s gold and Mexico’s own Islas de los Coronados sit several miles offshore. And then it was time to make the easy 15 minute drive home, thoroughly relaxed and reinvigorated, by our getaway that was as much a state of mind as a change of locale.

Isn’t it Time for Your Annual Family Beach Vacation in California?

Southern California has some of the best weather in the world all year long. It’s time you got out to enjoy it – why not do it in style at the beach? In fact, why not go all out and try out a Beach Resort vacation condo? Sound good? It may be a lot less expensive to stay in a beach timeshare rental than you could have ever imagined. But first, let’s pick a good beach, as California has lots of them, many of them quite famous indeed.

Well, first you’ll want to avoid the Paparazzi and the best way to do that is to find a family vacation rental location where those persnickety photographers won’t poison that pristine pacific paradise that California beaches are known for! What you need is perhaps a beach vacation rental upgrade this year. For instance you could consider the popular Southern California Beach Club or the Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort. Maybe you want to try the world famous Coronado Beach for your family vacation this year – when was the last time you got away for a while, the whole family?

The Coronado Beach Resort is not too far from the famous US Navy Seal Training Camp. And once over the bridge, San Diego is filled with great restaurants and downtown attractions too. I like hanging out at Java Jones Coffee shops, and then taking a walk down by the marinas. San Diego Sea World is also a favorite. Back on Coronado Island you might like the Hotel Del Coronado’s famous Sunday Brunch, it’s magnificent, although the Coronado Beach Resort has everything you need right there if you just want to enjoy life without a care in the world and relax?

The Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort is completely affordable and let me tell you they’ve done a first class job in downtown Carlsbad, the shopping district is fantastic, sit outside for brunch, have a cocktail, soak in the fresh air and do a little shopping with all the money you are saving this year. Finding the perfect beach timeshare rental or beach vacation rental, might be a lot easier than you think.

The Southern California Beach Club and I know you are salivating just thinking about the name, well, lucky for you it lives up to that reputation, and then some. Watching that Sunset on the beach in Oceanside, CA is truly spectacular, and your family will never forget this year’s vacation get-away. I like to walk into town and thank the US Marines for their services, and grab a giant bad of onion rings at the popular restaurant. Oceanside is a cool place and the Southern California Beach Club is the coolest place in town.

Perhaps, a beach timeshare rental is in your near future, best of all you can book your reservation online. Why not treat you and your family to a first class beach resort vacation this year? Not only will you be saving money, but you’ll look really good doing it! No wonder everyone loves California, life really is a beach.

It’s hard to believe, but now you can enjoy a beatiful sunset, walk on the beach, and ice skating all at once. It doesn’t sound like a typical San Diego vacation but is just one way you can enjoy the winter activities this year.

Are you starting to get cold at night? Is the winter creeping up on you? There is still time to take a warm weather vacation in the U.S. Start heading south! Southern California, Arizona, Texas, and Florida are all warm enough for shorts and flip flops.

Not sure where to go? Take my advice by heading south to one of these four warm weather vacation destinations:

Orlando, Florida: It is not too late to hit the beach and Disneyworld. An average temparature of about 73 degrees in December will help you defrost and take in some last minute sunshine. Airfare is cheap and there are plenty of places to stay such as Sheraton Vistana Resort or Bahama BayResort… both 5 star quality for amazing prices.

There isn’t a single month of the year where the average high for the day is lower than 66 degrees. Every day is a beach day and if the sun is shining you can be sunbathing for your Christmas vacation. Don’t miss the unique beach towns of Coronado , Carlsbad, and Del Mar.

San Antonio, Texas: The most visited city in Texas has great temperatures for travelling there between October through April. Plenty of fun activities such as Sea World, the Alamo, the River Walk, and more all make San Antonio a great warm winter vacation destination. I recommend staying at the the Wyndham Riverside Suites.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/wattsbw2004/

Scottsdale, Arizona: Right now is the best time of the year to visit Scottsdale. Be sure to pack accordingly because you won’t need three layers to walk around in 68 degrees this winter. Stroll through art galleries, visit museums, or hone in on your golf skills, Scottsdale has something for everyone during the winter. There are many great places to stay, here are two of my favorites: Sheraton Desert Oasis and Westin Kierland Villas
